250 City Road

London

Project Information

Designed to provide high density, low energy residential community living completed with shops, cafes and restaurants arranged around a green park in the center of the development. 250 City Road will be a distinctive new landmark for Islington. Located opposite the City Road Basin (part of the Regent’s Canal), the development has been designed to protect against the noise and pollution of the city as well and northerly winds, and in line with client’s progressive environmental strategy, photovoltaic panels will generate renewable energy and green roofs to encourage wildlife and rainwater harvesting.

Appointed by AJ Morrisroe + Sons, our work includes the construction of a 110m perimeter cantilever secant piled wall, to form a double level basement for car parking and plant rooms, as well as 270 bearing piles to support the superstructure

Design

Pile Design was undertaken in-house by GSS technical department with full coordination with the Client and their Structural Engineers.

CFA techniques

Work was undertaken using our 100t Soilmec SR-95 high-torque multi-discipline piling rig utilising continuous flight auger (CFA) techniques. Piles were installed to depths of 32m.

Logistics

Our work was sequenced to suit the phased release of areas and involved the installation of secant piles from a high-level platform and the relocation of plant and equipment to lower basement levels to install the bearing piles.

Mini piling

So that we could tie into perimeter secant piles installed by others in a previous phase, we mobilised a Klemm 709 specialist restricted access mini-piling rig, in order to construct the piles within the constrained areas adjacent to existing structures as well as carrying out restricted access mini piling where there was low headroom for tower cranes.
