Project Information

The increased use of cloud computing has resulted in the proliferation of data centres, a rapidly emerging market sector which is both vital to the health of UK businesses and central to the UK’s digital economy.

Equinix LD7 is the fourth Equinix data centre to be built on the Slough Trading Estate.

Morrisroe Piling was appointed by J Coffey Limited and our work included the design and Installation of 60Nr x 500mm diameter piles, with depths up to 21.8m, and 106Nr x 600mm diameter with depths up to 20.8m. Additionally our scope included the adoption and warranting of 34Nr existing 600mm diameter piles (installed in a previous phase of works) as well as installing two working test piles. The works were undertaken using our Soilmec SR95 piling rig.

Carbon efficient design

The building was custom designed to take advantage of the most efficient mechanical and electrical technology available. This is expected to result in a reduction of CO2 output of 23,000 tonnes of CO2per year (the equivalent of taking 7000 cars off the road per year).

Phased works

The development is in three stages. The existing trading estate block was previously occupied by 13 light industrial, depot and office units. Phase 1 works involved the demolition of the western half of the site and the construction of a three-story steel framed structure. Bay 8 formed the phase 2 site. Our work was sequenced to suit the phased programme.

Ground Conditions

A desktop study identified the likely ground conditions and contamination potential for both phases 1 and 2 so that ground investigations could cover both areas. The piles were founded in chalk.

CFA Techniques

Work was undertaken using our 100t Soilmec SR-95high-torque multi-discipline piling rig utilising continuous flight auger (CFA)techniques. Piles were installed to depths of about 22m.
