Set to be not only the largest railway station to be built in the UK but also the best connected, the Old Oak Common project required £1 million of our piling services over the course of 12 months. This included bearing piles to support cast in-situ retaining walls linked to the lowering of Old Oak Common Lane, creating access to the new HS2 station and relocating an existing SSEN substation.
Piles were installed with rotary bored piling techniques using 900 and 600 mm diameter piles and segmental flight auger (SFA) techniques using 750 mm diameter augers. They ranged in depth from 12 to 35 metres.

Challenges: Careful Coordination
We carried out thermal integrity profile (TIP) testing and the installation of reinforcement cages with integral “L” bars for continuity into the pile cap. This required careful coordination between parties to ensure that working levels and fabrication details could achieve the required tolerances.
Restricted Access: Low Loads
The area was also restricted, requiring us to work on an existing cut slope above an old gravity retaining wall. This meant surcharge loads needed to be kept as low as possible. We mobilised our Soilmec SR-75 piling rig to complete the rotary bored piling and used a Hutte 204 mini piling rig to construct the 750 mm diameter SFA piles.
