One of the largest redevelopments of its kind in Europe, Battersea Power Station saw the iconic Grade II listed structure transformed into a residential, retail and office space complete with a new underground station.
Appointed by Keltbray Piling, we worked on the project on a total of five occasions to support various ground engineering challenges. Regular liaison with multiple stakeholders and a strict logistics programme ensured the piles were installed within programme and on budget.
Two Klemm 709 piling rigs were used to install 31 no. 450/508 mm diameter bored temporary cased piles up to 30 metres deep within a 5 metre height restriction. These piles were used to support temporary works towers inside the boiler house, which were erected to retain the west façade. A further 58 piles formed part of a contiguous wall, enabling the excavation of lower level galleries.
Restricted access, coupled with working on one of the busiest sites in the UK, necessitated careful planning working alongside other contractors to ensure coordinated delivery slots and ‘just in time’ deliveries.
Due to the industrial history of the site, the piles were positioned to avoid buried pipes and tunnels. Up to 15 metres of temporary casing was installed through a mixture of made up ground and river terrace gravels prior to reaching the underlying London Clay.
Further contracts and visits were made to Battersea Power Station at various stages during the development. These involved further contig wall and bearing piles as well as dewatering wells.
